Gangavaram port impasse continues

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , May 4

The construction work at the Gangavaram port continued to be stalled for the sixth day on Thursday, as no headway could be made in the talks with the fishermen.

According to Mr Bh. A. Rama Raju, Assistant Vice-President of Gangavaram Port Ltd, the delay and disruption could prove costly and the commissioning may be delayed by six months or so. "We have to complete certain works before June and the onset of monsoon. Otherwise, it is bound to be delayed,'' he said.

The District Collector, Mr Anil Kumar Singhal, and the Commercial Taxes Minister, Mr K. Ramakrishna, held a series of talks with the fishermen, but to no avail.

The fishermen are insisting on construction of a fishing jetty at a site specified by them (Nallamarammapatalu) as well as rehabilitation package for them. There is a dispute over the number of fishermen in the village as well as the location of the jetty.

The CPM is leading the agitation of the fishermen, but subsequently all other political parties except the ruling Congress party have expressed solidarity with the fishermen and supported their demands.
