Niligirs tea output up a tad

P.S. Sundar

Average yield up at 239 kg a hectare

Coonoor , May 4

Contrary to the fear that the tea production in the current year in the Nilgiris is lower than last year based on the lower offerings at the auctions, the latest statistics indicate a marginal increase in the output.

According to the Regional centre of the UPASI Tea Research Foundation, the production in its member estates in the first four months of this calendar year totalled 4.34 million kgs against 4.33 million kgs in the same months of last year. The five-year mean was, however, higher at 4.52 million kgs.

This has happened because of the April crop running ahead of last year in all the agro-climatic zones except Colacumby.

The average yield has increased to 239 kgs per hectare from 231 kgs, posting a growth of 3.5 per cent.

If this trend continues, the production is likely to exceed last year's level when the year ends. Pest infestation

A major hindrance is the infestation of pests. Red spider mite infestation has flared up in many estates.
