Spices & Condiments Cardamom improves on buying support G.K. Nair
Kochi , May 5 Cardamom prices ruled steady with marginal improvement during the week at the auctions held in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. After the decline in April first week the prices moved up by Rs 20 a kg on buying support, Mr P.C. Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, told Business Line.
Kumily auction
At the Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company (CPMC) auction at Kumily on Wednesday 62 tonnes of cardamom arrived and almost the entire lot was sold. The average price moved up to Rs 211 a kg, he said. North Indian buyers were active while there was no export buying.
Grade varieties fall
The prices of graded varieties were AGEB Rs 290-300; AGB Rs 210-220; AGS Rs 195-205; and AGS 1 Rs 165- 175 a kg. Bulk was sold at Rs 122-224 a kg. The prices of the graded varieties in the local market at Bodinayakannur were less by Rs 10 a kg. Total arrivals at the last seven auctions stood at 170 tonnes. The growing areas have received intermittent summer showers and therefore, given the present condition the next crop should be good in general. However, it depends solely on the vagaries of weather and hence it is too early to say anything, growers' sources pointed out. According to them, the auctioneers are planning to suspend auctions from June 7 to July 12, the lean period of the season. Harvesting has almost come to an end and most of the arrivals at present are from the stock held by major growers, market sources said.
