Mumbai, May 5

The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee has granted regulatory approval to 16 new Bollgard cotton hybrids (genetically modified cottonseed) for cultivation in the North and Central parts of the country. This takes the total number of such cotton hybrids available to 36, according to a release from Mahyco-Monsanto Biotech (India). Currently, the company has co-licensing agreement with 11 Indian seed companies that hold regulatory approval. The Bollgard varieties are available for cultivation in the 2006 planting season, the company said.
