Tension at Gangavaram; leaders, fishermen arrested

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , May 5

There was tension at Gangavaram village again on Friday, as the State Government decided to get tough with the agitating fishermen in order to resume construction work at the port disrupted for a week due to the agitation.

Several leaders — Mr. Ch. Narasinga Rao (CPM) in the forefront of the agitation, Mr J.V Satyanarayana Murthy (CPI) and several others belonging to the Telugu Desam and BJP - were arrested early in the morning here at their houses as a pre-emptive measure.

At Gangavaram port site, the leaders of fishermen were arrested and removed from the spot. Women were dispersed and the tents and utensils removed. Fishermen in large numbers had been camping there for the past one week, disrupting work at the port and exerting pressure on the Government to concede their demands.

In all, it is estimated, 300 fishermen and leaders may have been arrested during the day.

The Government rejected the demand of fishermen for a fishing jetty at Nallamarammapatalu and decided to go with the implementation of a rehabilitation package unilaterally.
