IPR Call to protect intellectual property Our Bureau
Chennai , May 6 "Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; where knowledge is free... " By Rabindranath Tagore, extracted from a book, with clear copyright, bought for Rs 395 and beamed on a screen from a digital projector at a conference. Knowledge should be free but without that copyright, would the world know that this poem was Tagore's? Mr Jim T. Dwyer, Investigator, Regional Asia-Pacific Law & Corporate Affairs Digital Integrity, Microsoft, made the point to stress the need to protect intellectual property. Knowledge should be free but to disseminate that knowledge... to write that book... involves cost. It would also not be fair to the person who did that work if somebody else capitalised on it. Without the notion of copyright and without the publishing industry and the infrastructure that fuelled it where would we be, he asked? Addressing an Indo-US seminar and workshop on intellectual property rights enforcement here on Saturday, he said that intellectual property is the foundation of many organisations. Public policy, education and enforcement should be tailored to control piracy. Piracy is rampant because of the ease of copying, high return on investment and the low risk. Awareness among the enforcement agencies of the impact of intellectual property theft is low. "Police should not be dismissive of IP crimes." Piracy is rampant and there is need to stem the tide.
