`ADB must quit coal or Asia'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, May 7

Greenpeace has asked the Asian Development Bank to quit coal or quit Asia, urging the multi-lateral financial institution to stop funding "dirty projects". After four days of campaign both within and outside the 39th annual meeting of ADB's board of governors, the Greenpeace activists have termed it a "symbolic step in the right direction" the bank's announcement to set up the $1-billion fund for promoting clean energy. Addressing a press conference here, Mr K. Srinivas, Clean Energy Campaigner of Greenpeace India, said the bank should draft a roadmap with specific milestones to put this plan into action. He demanded that ADB shift all funding away from coal and towards a total renewable and energy efficiency target.
