Blacksmith to tackle pollution in India

Blacksmith Institute, the US-based organisation that assistslocal communities in tackling pollution, plans to expand its operations to Central Asia and Central America.
Giving a presentation on `Addressing pollution in India' at the ADB meeting here on Friday, Mr Richard Fuller, Director of Blacksmith Institute, said the institute planned to start operations in China soon.
Currently the institute has 55 projects ongoing in 14 countries, with support from multilateral lending agencies such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.
Polluted Places Fund
To support its growing number of projects worldwide, the institute has decided to set up a `Polluted Places Fund'. "We are talking to philanthropies, NGOs and other stakeholders in this regard," he said.
The institute has started identifying, prioritising and cleaning-up some worst pollution problems in India. It has so far listed out over 100 sites in the country that require intervention.
