Logistics - Supply Chain Management

Convergence of services

New development continues to ripple through the supply chain industry. Earlier, the warehousing companies became logistics companies and, with this, logistics managers became supply chain professionals and 3PLs (third party logistics), 4PLs (fourth party logistics). According to experts, the next big thing to happen in the supply chain industry will be supply chain convergence.

Convergence is all about the combination of relevant services to provide customers with a broader set of solutions. Earlier, convergence meant fusion of warehousing, freight forwarding and transportation management. Leading logistics service providers developed integrated supply chain solutions and helped customers reduce the number of logistics suppliers they used.

Today, the companies are increasingly competing by combining services. For example, PWC Logistics has acquired GeoLogistics, Trans-Link and Transoceanic in order to add freight-forwarding , event logistics and project logistics to their arsenal of contract warehousing-based capabilities. The convergence is already underway.
