Agricultural Policy States - Andhra Pradesh AP sets up special farm panel Our Bureau
Ploughing ahead Farmers show interest in learning the components of integrated pest management and integrated nutrient Lab to land (scientists visiting the fields) programme to help the farmers in modernisation of cultivation mooted. Hyderabad, May 7 The Andhra Pradesh Government has constituted a special committee consisting of agricultural and allied departments to closely monitor issues raised by the farmers during the Rythu Chaitanya Yatras and Rythu Sadassus. Since this is a continuous process, the Government has decided to follow up issues raised by farmers and ensure that various programmes and schemes of agricultural and allied departments are implemented effectively and farmers get benefit out of these programmes. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, discussed these issues with officials of the agricultural department. During the Rythu Chaitanya Yatras in 2006-07, over 24 lakh farmers were trained and the multi-disciplinary teams consisting of various departments visited 54,400 habitations. Through Rythu Chaitanya Yatra, about 18.50 lakh farmers were trained. About 42.50 lakh farmers were trained in two years and over one lakh habitations visited. Twelve departments and bankers attended the programme. The Rythu Sadassus facilitated transfer of latest agricultural technology to farmers. The Chief Minister was informed that farmers have shown interest in learning the components of integrated pest management and integrated nutrient management. Lot of interest was shown on SRI (System of Rice Intensification) cultivation and farm mechanisation. Dr Reddy suggested that Lab to land (Scientists visiting the fields) programme to help the farmers in modernisation of cultivation. The stalls set up by AP Transco exhibiting the capacitors was a big draw. Farmers were informed on the advantages of installing capacitors that would enhance not only the voltage profile but prevent burning of motors.
NDC WORKING GROUP
The Working Group of National Development Council on Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development and Fisheries on Saturday finalised an interim report. The Group chaired by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, maintained that measures should be initiated to improve the productivity in cattle and standardisation of semen quality. The Group also felt that revamping of the breeding programme with quality assurance in semen production, breeding, maintenance of bulls should be given high priority. The Working Group stressed the importance for improvement in the dairy sector by encouraging institutional structures such as dairy cooperatives, producer institutions and producer companies. It advocated modernisation of rearing practices for sheep and goat husbandry. The Group favoured Specific breeding programmes for sheep and goat should be developed.
