Letters Galbraith's contribution
An economist's vision must echo not only the pulse of the common man, but the need of the hour. During the 1960s, when John Kenneth Galbraith served as the US envoy to India, this is precisely what he attempted. Also, Galbraith proactively tried to overcome the misgivings that the US State Department had vis-à-vis the Nehru government. And the Indo-US relationship continued to sail, albeit often on rough seas without capsizing. However, much of the classical thinking that JKG was a votary of would not be suited to the consumer-driven, globalised order of today. The Affluent Society was a seminal work, and, to me, a priceless introduction to the writings of this towering personality. V. B. N. Ram
