Retailing States - Tamil Nadu Giordano sets up shop Our Bureau
Chennai , May 9 Giordano has launched its India operations by opening its first store in Chennai. Located in Chennai City Centre, the store marks the beginning of Giordano's ambitious plans for the Indian market, says a press release. According to Peter Lau, Chairman and Chief Executive of Giordano International, the company is bullish on India and will open around 20 stores in the country by 2008. Speaking to Business Line, Mr Ishwar Chugani, Director, Giordano Fashions India Pvt Ltd, said the company chose Chennai as the launchpad as it felt the season was very similar to its major markets in South-East Asia and West Asia. The brand is also well recognised in the South as many Indians who live in these regions are from the South, he said, adding that the mall location also helped the brand favour Chennai. Currently, Giordano will sell only from its exclusive stores, he said. The full range including jeans, t-shirts, khakis, wrinkle shirts and trousers available in Giordano's stores worldwide will be available. The pricing will be comparable to that in the West Asian stores, Mr Chugani said. Started in 1981 in Hong Kong, today Giordano operates more than 1,600 stores spread over 30 countries including China, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, West Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Chennai-based Giordano Fashions India will be the country's exclusive distributor for the brand, the press release said.
