New Delhi, May 9

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has received 41 applications from various channels for permission to downlink their programmes in India. An official statement issued here on Tuesday states that of the 41 applications three were from news and current affairs channels, while all others were entertainment-based channels. The channels that have applied for permission to downlink include Star Plus, Star Vijay, AXN, Discovery Channel, CNN International and Ten Sports.

The Ministry has also clarified that a cable operator may continue to carry or include in his cable service any television broadcast or channel, which has made an application for registration to the Central Government on or before May 11 this year. "Such carriage will be permitted for a period of six months from the date of such commencement or till registration to the television channel has been granted or refused, whichever is earlier," the official statement added.
