The common facility for treatment and disposal of industrial waste from various factories in the State is a project suggested by the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee.

Kochi , May 9

The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT), as part of its commitment to social causes, has handed over 50 acres of land at its Ambalamedu township to the Kerala Government for setting up a common industrial-waste treatment and disposal facility.

FACT has received an amount of Rs 3.12 crore towards 50 per cent of the cost while the remaining would be the share of FACT's equity in the company being set up to manage the plant, an official release here said.

The common facility for treatment and disposal of industrial waste from various factories in the State is a project suggested by the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee as a permanent solution to environmental pollution from factories. The absence of such a common facility hampers various chemical factories, which at present, do not have proper pollution control and waste disposal facilities.

Though FACT has the most modern pollution control facilities and waste disposal arrangement of its own, the company is extending maximum cooperation for the project, as it is essential for the survival and growth of a number of other industrial units in Kerala. FACT has been actively associated with the project from the initial stage, but further measures to implement the project were delayed due to various reasons, it said.

Handing over of the land, FACT added, would augment speedy implementation of the facility.
