National Knowledge Commission

This is with reference to the article "Knowledge panel members divided on reservations" (Business Line, May 9).

What is the harm if economic criteria, irrespective of caste or religion, is taken as the scale for eligibility in reservations instead of the unscientific scale of caste?

Family holding of movable and immovable properties, spending pattern of family-owned or rented asset of family, and family income should be taken as basis, after compiling the data. Until then, no fresh reservation proposals should be put up.

The existing system of reservation based on caste is politically motivated as the beneficiaries form a vote-bank for political parties. If reservation is thrust on the private sector also, the labour laws will become much more complicated and lower productivity.

Also, recruitment bottle-necks will not help industry, driving companies away from India.

Moreover, the reservation quantum should decrease every passing decade.

The present system is certainly outdated and will not yield the required result.

Moreover, uniform economic criteria will bring in communal harmony and true secularism.
