`Clarifications on SEZ rules soon'

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 10

The Government would come up with certain clarifications on the rules governing special economic zones in the next few days, said the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath. "All issues on the SEZ rules have been satisfactorily resolved. Clarifications to the rules would be issued in next few days. We will ensure that the rules do not inhibit incrementality of investment in the IT sector," Mr Kamal Nath told newspersons after an Empowered Group of Ministers meeting on SEZs here on Wednesday.

He, however, declined to comment on how the earlier specified minimum 10 hectares area norm for IT SEZs would get altered. Indications are that the minimum acreage (10 hectares) norm for IT SEZs would be done away with.

There would, however, be a minimum built-up area norm for IT SEZs depending on the type of cities where they are located. Moreover, any employment generation norm is unlikely to be stipulated. For Tier-1 cities, the minimum built-up area would be 1 million sq. ft and 5 lakh sq. ft for Tier-II cities. For Tier-III, the built-up area norm is likely to be 2.5 lakh sq. ft, informed sources said.
