Regional navigation satellite system

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval to undertake the development and deployment of an Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) at a cost of Rs 1,420 crore, with a foreign exchange component of Rs 1,100 crore, excluding launch services. The development and deployment of IRNSS constellation, the ground infrastructure, navigation, safety and certification, and verification software is to be completed in 5-6 years from the date of approval of the project.
The Cabinet has also approved the re-organisation of the Ministry of Ocean Development as Ministry of Earth Sciences. It has also approved the constitution of the Earth Commission. Besides, the Cabinet has given its approval for introducing amendments to the National Institute of Fashion Technology Bill 2005. As recommended by the Standing Committee of Parliament and accepted by the Government with certain modifications, the amendments will improve the definition of "fashion" contained in the Bill and give representation to members of Parliament on the Board of Governors.
