May entail Rs 1,200-cr investment

New Delhi , May 10

Tata Power Company is in the race for setting up a 300 MW power plant in South Africa.

"We have been prequalified for the project in South Africa," the Tata Power Director, Mr Adi Engineer, said here.

Talking to newspersons at the sidelines of a conference here, he said the plant was proposed to be set up as a joint venture with an international partner.

The company would shortly submit its bid to the South African authorities. The project could entail investments of around Rs 1,200 crore.

Speaking about the plans for the future, Mr Engineer said the company is looking at ramping up generation capacity within the country by 4,500 MW over the next few years.

New capacities

According to the estimated industry figure of Rs 4 crore to develop one MW of capacity, the proposed capacity addition plans of the company would translate into investment of over Rs 18,000 crore.

The company is looking at Maharashtra and Jharkhand for sites to develop new capacities.

Mr Engineer said TPC was planning a 1,000 MW power plant at an investment of Rs 4,000 crore in the northern region specifically to meet the requirements of Delhi and neighbouring States.

Responding to questions regarding the Delhi Government's proposed plans to develop a project in Bawana, he said the company would be open to the idea of participating in developing a station in the Capital as and when the opportunity came up.

Bangladesh foray

Besides the possible foray into South Africa, Tata Power is already in the process of exploring the possibility of entering the Bangladesh market.

Tata Power is the country's oldest power utility with capacity of 2,300 MW. The company's 1,350-MW Trombay plant near Mumbai, is its biggest project, while other smaller plants around the country run on coal and water.
