A vote for `Brand Buddha'

Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, celebrating the Left Front's landslide victory in Bengal.

Reporters looking for reactions to election results found that many in the Congress were quite pleased with the Left Front's thumping victory in West Bengal. Though it was a known fact that the Left would retain power there, it was also a litmus test for the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, who has strong opponents within the Front, objecting to his foreign investment policies and his liberal interaction with industrialists. Now that `Brand Buddha' has got the endorsement of the people with a record majority, those pushing for economic reforms in the Congress are hoping the party can invoke this `brand' while negotiating with the Left at national level.
