Concern over tanker mishaps in Kochi

Kochi, May 11

Various environmental organisations have expressed concern on the growing number of accidents involving chemical tankers in the busy seaport-airport road near here. The latest in the series is the overturning of a kerosene filled tanker lorry near HMT recently. Mr K.V.A.Iyer, President of the Cochin Port Labour Union, in a statement issued here said the authorities should take these accidents as a warning considering the large scale transportation of anhydrous ammonia gas through these roads in total disregard to all safety norms by various companies. A memorandum signed by various non-governmental organisations and prominent persons such as Mr Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer had brought this to the notice of State Pollution Control Board, he said
