Patents (Amendment) Rules notified

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 11

With a view to enforcing transparency and ensuring time-bound disposal of patent applications, the Patents (Amendment) Rules 2006 has prescribed definitive timelines for various activities by the Patent Offices.

The Government has now notified the Patents (Amendment) Rules 2006. Commenting on the rules, the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath said that the latest amendments to the Patents Rules represented yet another major step in India's endeavour to develop a vibrant and user-friendly intellectual property regime that would facilitate as well as encourage innovation and creativity. The thrust of the Patents Rules was to introduce transparency, decentralise the functioning of Patent offices, simplify the procedures so as to make them user friendly, he added.

The Patents (Amendment) Rules 2006 has been finalised through a consultative process involving patent attorneys, industry associations, Government departments concerned and other stakeholders. All patent related activities can now be performed by all the Patent Offices at Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai.
