Kolkata , May 12

The much-talked about small car project of Tata Motors is almost certain to be located in West Bengal.

That is, if one is to go by what the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, had to say to reporters after the Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr Ravi Kant, called on him at the State Government headquarters of Writers' Buildings here on Friday."It is final," Mr Bhattacharjee told newspersons when asked if it had been finalised that West Bengal had been chosen as the site for the proposed small car project of Tata Motors.

However, Mr Ravi Kant told reporters that West Bengal was "one of the States that had been shortlisted" for the proposed automobile venture of the Tatas. He declined to indicate a time frame by which a final decision in this regard would be taken. He also declined to confirm or deny whether the proposed automobile venture was the "Rs 1 lakh car project". The Tata Motors MD refused to divulge the names of the other States that were on the radar for the proposed project.

A formal announcement on the project is expected when the Chairman of the Tata Group, Mr Ratan Tata, calls on Mr Bhattacharjee sometime in the next few weeks.

Mr Ravi Kant met the Chief Minister to "congratulate him" on behalf of the Tata Group on the ruling Left Front's landslide victory in the Assembly elections.

Several locations visited

Speaking to newspersons, West Bengal's Minister for Industries & Commerce, Mr Nirupam Sen, said the Tata Group had visited several locations to identify a site for setting up the proposed small car project.

While Tata Motors' officials had earlier visited Kharagpur for this purpose, lately they had visited Sankrail and Uluberia in Howrah district and Singur in Hooghly district. The group's final response was expected "in the next 10-15 days," he said.

Mr Sen said Mr Ratan Tata would meet the Chief Minister very soon. He said the State Government would decide upon what fiscal incentives to offer to the Tatas "only after they have decided to set up the small car plant here and they tell us what they want."

At present, the major investments of the Tata Group in West Bengal include the Hooghly Metcoke plant in Haldia, Tata Metaliks pig iron plant in Kharagpur and the Tata Bearings plant, also in Kharagpur.
