FARM LOANS WAIVED: The DMK President, Mr M. Karunanidhi, being sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by the Governor, Mr S.S. Barnala, in Chennai on Saturday.

Immediately after the swearing-in, he announced a cut in the price of PDS rice to Rs 2 a kg and waived Rs 6,866 crore of farm loans. The rice price cut from the present Rs 3.50 a kg means an additional food subsidy expenditure of Rs 550 crore a year. The order would take effect from June 3. Along with Mr Karunanidhi, 30 ministers were sworn in.
