IT-enabled Services Info-Tech - Human Resources IT, ITES industry may add 3.2 lakh jobs this fiscal Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee
New Delhi , May 13 Even as their revenues continue to grow at a scorching pace, Indian IT services and BPO companies are likely to add close to 3.2 lakh jobs during 2006-07, taking the overall employee base to about 1.6 million by the end of the current financial year. "The industry's employee strength has been estimated at about 1.28 million during 2005-06. We are yet to come out with final projections for the current year, but given the pace at which the industry is growing, the incremental figure is likely to be about 3.2 lakh during 2006-07," the Nasscom's Vice-President, Mr Sunil Mehta, told Business Line.
BPO contribution
Within the export category, the BPO sector is likely to add 1.4 lakh employees during the year, of which approximately 1.32 lakh will be in the offshore space and the balance, onsite. The domestic BPO segment, which is expected to take off in a big way this year, could generate 55,000 new jobs. As many as 1.10 lakh jobs are likely to be created in IT service exports, and another 75,000 fresh hirings would take place in the domestic IT services market.
Indirect jobs
"While the IT/ITES sector is creating jobs for engineers, computer science professionals and graduates, the indirect employment opportunities in support services, including catering, transportation and security, are also being created as a spin-off effect. Generally, the multiplier effect of the high-tech sector on indirect employment avenues is about 2.5 times. This means, in addition to the new jobs within the sector, about 7.5 to 8 lakh new indirect job opportunities would come up during the year," said the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik. "This is particularly exciting as these indirect jobs will benefit the semi-educated segment," Mr Karnik pointed out.
