Tourism States - Karnataka Karnataka must build competitive positioning in tourism: Study Our Bureau
Bangalore , May 15 , Karnataka's greatest challenge is to build competitive positioning to become a leading State in tourism in the next decade, according to a study `A growth agenda for Karnataka tourism: New opportunities for investment in tourism infrastructure.' The study jointly made by Crisil (Credit Rating Information Services of India Ltd) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) says that with India targeting 15 million tourists by 2010 and 23 million by 2015 and the open skies policy encouraging more foreign airlines to increase their operations, Karnataka has to strengthen its positioning and prepare to make the most of the country's growth targets. It is critical for the State to leverage the progress made from software proliferation, the study said.
`Develop Hampi'
The study, which was released by the Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, at the two-day Karnataka Tourism Expo-2006 in Mysore, has also stressed the need to develop Hampi as a good heritage destination, achieve the eco-tourism brand `green label' for key eco destinations, institute internal quality certification systems for all eco-tourism projects, develop a cruise terminal at Mangalore, explore the potential of river cruises and build upon its profile in medical tourism. The State must extend fiscal support for developing an international airport in Mysore apart from developing regional airstrips and airports to provide connectivity to important destinations.
