Telecommunications Shyam Tele bags GSM licence in UK Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 15 Telecom company Shyam Telecom on Monday said it has bagged a licence to offer GSM mobile services in the UK. The licence is initially for 10 year period and extendable at the discretion of Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industry. The UK-based subsidiary Shyam Telecom UK Ltd has been awarded the licence. It would be providing GSM networks in office buildings or campuses to offer seamless coverage. The other players, which have bagged the licence, include British Telecom, Cable & Wireless UK, O2, PLDT Ltd, Opal Telecom, amongst others. "There are 12 companies in all, and we are one of them," said Mr Rajiv Mehrotra, Chairman, Shyam Telecom. The licences are for 6.6 MHz of spectrum, which will be operated on a low-power basis. Multiple licences were awarded to maximise the alternative uses of the spectrum. He did not comment on the timeframe in which the company would start the new service. He also declined to comment on the investments .
