Effluents discharge project: Tirupur exporters for State Govt as co-promoter

G. Gurumurthy

To ensure successful implementation; solve problems plaguing the knitwear industry

Benefits that accrue
Implementation of marine discharge would help boost the textile industrial economy.
Lead to employment growth in State

Coimbatore , May 15

Knitwear exporters in Tirupur who have proposed a combined marine disposal of textile effluents covering the State's major textile processing centres have suggested that the Tamil Nadu Government be a co-promoter in the project.

The participation of the State Government would ensure the successful implementation of the project, the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has said.

The TEA wanted the Chief Minister to initiate necessary steps by instructing the State department concerned to take part in the proposed project.

Making a case for the Tamil Nadu Government's active participation in solving the critical industrial infrastructure, the TEA President, Mr A. Sakthivel, in his communication addressed to the Chief Minister, pointed out that export of knitwear from Tirupur is poised to reach the Rs 10,000-crore mark by next year but the only problem facing the knitwear industry is the discharge of effluents from dyeing industry.

The only solution open for handling the dye-house effluent is marine discharge and this course of action would benefit other textile centres such as Perundurai, Erode and Karur, besides Tirupur and implementation of marine discharge would help boost the textile industrial economy and also the employment growth of the State, Mr Sakthivel said.

Housing shortage

The TEA also highlighted the acute shortage of housing for labour and shortage of skilled labours. The migratory labour who are drawn to Tirupur knitwear industry badly needed housing schemes and the State Government could come out with suitable workers' housing scheme.

To tide over the skilled manpower shortage, Tirupur knitwear industry wanted short term courses be conducted in more number of the State's industrial training institutes as Tirupur industry would be willing to absorb these trained personnel.
