Few exercise right to get work

Our Bureau

MR JAIRAM RAMESH

Hyderabad , May 15

It may sound strange but, as of now, only 10 per cent of 39 lakh households in 13 districts chose to use their `Right' to get work from the Government. Only four lakh job-card holders sought to get work using the right bestowed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, said. The Minister, who supervised the progress made in implementation of the scheme in the neighbouring Ranga Reddy district here on Sunday, told presspersons that a good rabi season this year could be a reason for such a low turnout. Mr K. Raju, Principal Secretary (Rural Development, Government of AP), asserted that the Government was in a position to give work even if all the cardholders demanded employment. "We have a shelf of works lined up," he said.
