India and the US must be partners in intellectual property (IP) protection because a thriving, diversified economy must protect its IP rights, said Mr Chris Israel, US Co-ordinator for International IPR.

While speaking at an interactive session organised by the CII on Monday, he said that the US President, Mr George Bush, and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, wanted to double the trade volumes between the two countries every three years.

But to achieve this, it is important to promote strong innovation-led growth.

"Intellectual property is the fuel that powers the engine of prosperity, fostering invention and innovation."

He said that countries that protected IP invited and nurtured the type of innovation that leads to economic growth.
