Oilseeds & Edible Oil Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Edible oil imports down 19% Our Bureau
Mumbai , May 16 Edible oils imports during November 2005 to April 2006 (6 months) of the current oil season 2005-06 stood at 18,01,441 tonnes, down 19 per cent from 22,14,267 tonnes in same period of last year, according to figures released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA). The import of vegetable oils (edible) during April 2006 at 3,54,284 tonnes was down by 32 per cent from 5,21,145 tonnes in April 2005. During the review period, import of refined oils decreased to 85,479 tonnes from 2,74,652 tonnes due to correction in tariff value and widening the difference between crude palm oil (CPO) and RBD palmolein that has encourage the import of CPO over refined palmolein. Import of refined oil has reduced from 12 per cent to 5 per cent while import of crude edible oil increased to 95 per cent from 88 per cent. Palm oil products import was at 10,22,985 tonnes (57 per cent) and soft oil import was 7,78,456 tonnes (43 per cent), mainly soyabean oil (6,88,806 tonnes). The ratio between palm oil and soft oil during the first half year of current oil year was 57:43 from 65:35 of the last year.
