EU rules out nationality as criterion in Mittal case

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 16

In the light of the Government's recent query on the Mittal-Arcelor case, the European Union (EU) clarified on Tuesday that Mr Lakshmi Mittal's bid to takeover rival Arcelor would not be decided on the basis of nationality but on business and competition.

"Let me assure you that issue of nationality will not have any relevance in this context and only business and competition considerations will be considered," said Mr Francisco da Camara Gomes, European Union's Ambassador to India.

While speaking at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, he said the Mittal-Arcelor case was being studied under the merger regulation, just like many other market investigations across Europe.
