Roadways Corporate - Corporate Governance Shell India draws up safety standard for transporters Our Bureau
Bangalore , May 17 Shell India is drawing up a safety standard for commercial transporters, which will incorporate global best practices of the company. "Safety is a business issue for Shell," the company's Manager for Corporate Responsibility, Dr Shailaja D Sharma, told Business Line. In January 2006, Shell India and the Global Road Safety Partnership launched a joint pilot project in South India. A total of 10 transporters were handpicked from the Bangalore region where Shell had launched its retail fuels business. Nine of these 10 transporters were `outsiders' who did not have any current business with Shell. The pilot projects evaluated whether commercial transporters could adopt a voluntary safety code of conduct and identify the minimum standards required for safe transportation. The draft road safety policy focuses on the need for compliance with the law related to road safety, safeguarding people and managing road safety as any other critical business activity. The draft policy calls for establishing minimum standards and processes for driver, vehicle and journey management. It also calls for conducting planned inspections and audits on a regular basis to identify and eliminate sub-standard working conditions and practices. It also calls for reporting and conducting full investigations of all road incidents.
