Indian Navy erects memorial stupa

Indian Navy, in its efforts to remind the nation's rich maritime heritage and the significant contribution by personalities like Kunhali Marakkar, took a step forward by erecting a memorial stupa. The stupa was dedicated to the nation at Kozhikode on Wednesday by Mr M.K. Narayanan, National Security Adviser, in the presence of Vice Admiral SCS Bangara, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command, Kochi. A press release issued here said that the thought of a memorial emanated during Admiral Arun Prakash, Chief of Naval Staff, during his visit to Kunhali Marakkar Museum. The Marakkar's were honoured with the title of Kunhali by the Zamorin in recognition of their prowess in maritime warfare, which inflicted considerable to the Portuguese fleet. As a tribute to Kunhali, the Indian Navy has named two of its base as INS Kunhali I and II one of which trains Naval Police personnel and Musicians, while the other is a Naval Air Station at Colaba. Addressing the gathering, Mr Narayanan expressed his appreciation of the Navy for having chosen to commemorate the exemplary valour of the Kunjalis, Admiral of Zamorina.
