Pepper exports up 21 pc in Jan-March

Total shipments from 6 major producing countries during the period rose 13%

Kochi , May 18

Indian pepper exports have shown an increase of 21 per cent during January- March 2006 compared to the corresponding period last year while the total shipments from six major pepper producing countries recorded a rise of 13 per cent.

Shipments of black pepper from India during January-March 2006 stood at 4,550 tonnes as against 3,750 tonnes in the same period last year, registering an increase of 21 per cent.

Exports from major producing countries viz., Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka during the period are estimated at 50,630 tonnes as against 44,770 tonnes exported in the same period in 2005. However, when compared to the first quarter of 2004, exports were marginally less, by one per cent, according to the International Pepper Community.

Pepper exports in March 2006 from the six major exporting countries recorded a high for the last three years with 23,910 tonnes, up by 35 per cent compared with 17,665 tonnes in the same month last year and 26 per cent compared with 19,012 tonnes in March 2004.

Vietnam tops

Exports from Vietnam increased substantially by 80 per cent, followed by India by 18 per cent, while that from Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka decreased by 12 per cent, 30 per cent, 15 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

Vietnam continued to dominate by contributing 52 per cent of total pepper exports in January-March 2006, up 42 per cent from the same period last year. Total exports from Vietnam were at 26,574 tonnes as against 18,743 tonnes in January-March 2005.

Brazil was the second largest exporter during the period exporting 9,086 tonnes and contributing 18 per cent of total exports.

Exports from Brazil however decreased slightly by one per cent in terms of quantity and three per cent in terms of export share.

Total exports from Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka also decreased by 14 per cent, 27 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.
