Government - Politics

Left out?

It is not that the Left parties keep a close watch only on the Congress; they are equally suspicious of each other too. Chasing a tip that the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, was likely to discuss with the Left parties the issue of removing the 10 per cent cap on voting rights in the banking sector, a colleague called up the CPI office. But the CPI leader at the other end confessed to being clueless about any such meeting, and instead asked the journalist to find out from the CPI(M) if a meeting was scheduled. "I hope they are not going alone to discuss the matter with the Finance Minister and then present us with a fait accompli. The CPI(M) is quite capable of that.''
