Focus on education in Bimaru States

While "Population growth rates dip below 1 pc in TN, Kerala" (Business Line, May 18) may be welcome news, it is worrying that the BIMARU States continue to drive population growth in the country.

Without waiting for achieving high literacy rates, as in the South, technology should be advantageously used to educate and create awareness. The State governments of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh should devise special programmes to create awareness of prevalent social ills and for empowering women.

The main reason for the low HDI of India is the poor performance of these States.
