`Role of SME cos crucial'

Our Bureau

Chennai , May 18

The role of small and medium size software companies is critical to achieve the $60-billion target for software exports by 2010 from $24 billion in 2005-06, according to Mr Kiran Karnik, President of Nasscom.

Such a growth cannot be achieved by big companies alone. The SMEs need to contribute much more to the growth, he said at an inaugural function of the third delivery centre of Thinksoft Global Services Pvt Ltd.

According to Mr Karnik, SMEs need to be specialists in the fields they choose. Only specialists could attract talent from institutes like the IITs. Big companies can do the same kind of job that is done by a specialist SME, but they cannot sustain in the long run, he added.

Ms R. Rajalakshmi, Director of STPI, said that in the last two months about 20 companies have started operations in Chennai, of which 4-5 are MNCs.

Last year, 161 new companies started operations in the city. Out of the 900 software units in the city, 600 are SMEs, she added.

Mr Asvini Kumar, CEO of Thinksoft, said that Nasscom should undertake marketing initiatives to create a brand for Indian IT SMEs (within and outside the country), act as a catalyst for partnerships and alliances, and foster co-operative relationship between big and small IT companies.
