United Bank to step up exposure to SHGs, NGOs

Our Bureau

Kolkata , May 18

United Bank of India has proposed to step up its exposure to self-help groups and non-Government organisations as part of its plans on greater financial inclusion.

The bank, which has so far disbursed over Rs 40 crore to the SHG/NGO segment, hopes to assist initiatives taken up by these outfits, Mr P.K. Gupta, CMD, has indicated.

UBI, which disbursed Rs 16 crore or so to more than 7,000 SHGs and NGOs (micro-finance institutions included), plans to extend finance to about 10,000 self-help organisations in the current fiscal. An overwhelming portion of its disbursal in this area - more than 90 per cent - has been directed towards SHGs operating in West Bengal, where UBI is headquartered.

On Thursday, the bank started to showcase products made by some of the organisations it has financed. Its display window was inaugurated by Ms Shyamala Gopinath, Deputy Governor, RBI.

UBI will henceforth use products made by SHGs as corporate gifts, Mr Gupta said, adding that the display window will enable the organisations concerned to market their wares.
