Chennai , May 18

Yamaha has targeted an increase of 10,000 units in bike sales in Tamil Nadu and Kerala each in 2006-07, to 46,000 units in Tamil Nadu and 28,000 units in Kerala, according to Mr D. Anjan, Regional Business Manager - Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Yamaha Motor India Ltd.

Speaking at the launch of the latest offering from the Yamaha stable, the four-stroke 125 cc Gladiator, he said that currently Tamil Nadu constitutes about 24 per cent of the company's nationwide market, while Kerala makes up about 9 per cent.

Libero failure

Asked about the failure of the Yamaha Libero in Tamil Nadu, he said that it was not due to any lack of quality on the part of the bike, but rather an insufficient network of dealers in the State. Since then, the company has tied up with eight dealers in Chennai alone.

Currently, Yamaha has a 5 per cent share in the motorcycle market throughout India, and will look to triple this by 2010, he said. In Tamil Nadu, the company has a 10 per cent market share.

The company has targeted nationwide sales of 3.5-lakh units for 2006-07, of which the Gladiator will constitute 10,000 a month, and another 50,000 will be accounted for by exports to neighbouring Asian countries.
