CLW hands over CDs to Railway research organisation

"The conversion would prove highly beneficial to the user railways for running, maintenance and design & development of such locos.''

Kolkata May 20

, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has successfully completed the transfer of technology documentation (ToT) pertaining to the three-phase electric locomotives, and has formally handed over the CDs to the Lucknow-headquartered Research Design & Standard Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways.

CLW, till date, has produced as many as 100 modern three-phase electric locomotives for the Indian Railway system. The set of documents has been converted into searchable electronic format for easy accessibility of the users.

According to top brass of the Indian Railways, by converting the full set of documents into a well indexed format, CLW has ensured longevity and accessibility of the important IR documents, which would prove highly beneficial to the user railways for running, maintenance and design & development of such locos.

At a recent meeting on the "Review and Design of 3-phase electric locomotives" now being produced at the CLW works in Chittaranjan, under the chairmanship of Mr Sukhbir Singh, General Manager, CLW, Mr R.K. Bansal, Chief Electrical Engineer of CLW, handed over the CDs of complete set of ToT documents to Mr I.C. Sharma, Senior EDSEE, RDSO. The review meeting, according to Mr Sukhbir Singh, brought together the users (from Northern Railway, NC Railways, EC Railways, Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway and Central Railways), designers and manufacturers on a common platform.

He said the discussions were expected to go a long way in improving "enginemanship", loco reliability and performance.

Freight target

The Railways has set a freight target of 800 million tonnes for the current fiscal, and CLW, according to the GM, has to shoulder the onerous responsibility of being the motive power provider to the nation.

The increase in traffic is expected almost entirely from the sections served by CLW's locomotives.

It is now looking into ways of upgrading its products to enhance its productivity.
