Pipeline project: CPI(M) seeks explanation

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 20

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has raised objections to the in-principle nod given by the Cabinet for India to join the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) natural gas pipeline project. In a statement issued here, the CPI(M) has sought to know from the Government as to why a US-sponsored pipeline project was being favoured. According to the statement, the Cabinet decision comes at a juncture when the US has openly declared its opposition to the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project. It is well known that the US wants India to be part of the pipeline project emanating from Turkmenistan. "It is disturbing that the Government is giving priority to US strategic interests and sideling the Iran pipeline project, which is more suited to our national interests and energy requirements," the statement said.
