People Dabur group patriarch R.C. Burman passes away Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 20 Mr Rattan Chand Burman, former chairman of the Dabur group of companies and patriarch of the Burman family that owns the company, passed away late Friday night. The 88-year-old stately gentleman is survived by two sons, Mr Pradip Burman and Mr Siddharth Burman, and grandchildren, one of whom is Mr Amit Burman who currently heads Dabur Foods, the makers of the Real fruit juices brand. Mr R.C. Burman was the grandson of the company's founder, Dr S.K. Burman, a physician who started in a small way by preparing natural cures for diseases such as cholera and malaria. He was the uncle of Mr V.C. Burman, the current Chairman of the Dabur Group.
Modernisation era
As the company grew from strength to strength on the `good health for all' platform and made Ayurvedic formulations its forte, Mr R.C. Burman held its reins for five years in the late Eighties to early Nineties. In fact, it is his era that saw the first flush of modernisation in the company, including its diversification. Mr Burman, as patriarch of the family, witnessed the transformation of the company from a homegrown enterprise into a full-fledged group with five companies apart from flagship Dabur India. Today, the company's operations are handled by a professional team with the family members' involvement coming in for a qualitative shift, where fresh members are encouraged to develop their own ventures.
