Economy doing reasonably well, says Manmohan

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 22

The Prime Minister on Monday said that the economy has been doing "reasonably well" over the past two years. He said that in order to "sustain an increased growth rate and find the resources to support the poor, we have to manage finances with wisdom and foresight."

Addressing a gathering of UPA Ministers and leaders of allies and supporting parties on the second anniversary of the coalition here, Dr Singh said, "Running a Government is not difficult, building a nation certainly is. This is what our people expect of us. We must never fail them."

He said despite pressure of high international oil prices, the Government has been able to moderate its inflationary impact.

"However, we cannot continue to subsidise energy consumption on this scale," he said.

Stressing on the need for "a more caring, yet competitive economy and transparent, honest and efficient Government," the Prime Minister said that the judiciary will have to be reformed and the legislatures, panchayats and municipalities made more result-oriented.

The UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, in her address, said that steps had been taken to expand the availability of rural credit with emphasis on agriculture.

Ms Gandhi also said issues concerning workers in the unorganised sector needed to be addressed.

"In the months ahead, we hope to fulfil other promises under the National Common Minimum Programme in protecting the rights of tribal communities living in forest areas," she said.
