India loses bid to host Treenut meet

A.J. Vinayak

Mangalore , May 23

India has lost the bid to host the World Treenut Convention (WTC) in 2008. The Spain-based International Nut Council (INC), the organiser of the event, has awarded it to Chile. A decision in this regard was taken at the Montreal convention on May 14.

The Chairman of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI), Mr Walter D'Souza, who led the Indian delegation to the Montreal convention between May 12 and 14, told Business Line that India was one of the contenders for hosting the World Treenut Convention in 2008. China and Egypt were the other contenders. There was tough competition between China and India to host the event in 2008.

Council renamed

The Montreal convention also took a decision to rename International Nut Council as International Nut and Dry Fruits Council, and Chile's selection may be because of the reason that it was a major force in dry fruits , he said.

Mr D'Souza said now they would have to look at bidding for the event in 2009. A dcisions would be taken in 2007. The convention was one of the largest in the world in food processing industry, he added.

It may be mentioned here that Indian bid for hosting the rights of WTC in 2008 was short-listed for the first time in the history of INC. India plays an important role in INC as it has 67 per cent share in processing and 33 per cent in consumption of cashew.
