STILL FIRM: A worker grading raw arecanuts near Kochi. Arecanut, mainly used as masticators, contains various bio-chemical constituents such as polyphenols, fat polysaccharides, fibre and protein. Arecanut forms the backbone and sole means of livelihood of nearly six million people in the country. Mainly cultivated in Karnataka, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, its production in the country is about four lakh tonnes grown in over three lakh hectares. The country accounts for nearly 53 per cent of the total world production. Currently, arecanut is ruling between Rs 5,700 and Rs 7,250 a quintal depending on quality and variety.
