3 lakh new power connections this year: Kerala Minister

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , May 24

The Kerala State Electricity Board will provide three lakh new connections this year, according to the Electricity Minister, Mr A.K. Balan.

He told newspersons here on Wednesday that this would mean clearing the backlog of applications for power connections pending with the board. To those applicants, who do not need new posts to be erected to carry the distribution lines, connections will be given within the next month.

Regarding the restructuring of KSEB in accordance with the Electricity Act, 2003, the Minister said that he would hold discussions with all sections and take a decision on the basis of a consensus.

KSEB is to get arrears to the tune of Rs. 1,500 crore from the consumers. Government Departments and organisations owed around Rs. 800 crore to the board, while the remaining amount was due from private institutions, Mr. Balan said.

The financial position of KSEB is by and large satisfactory with the annual revenue gap hovering in the region of Rs. 100 crore. Another good monsoon would improve the situation further and in that event, the board might consider passing on some benefits to the consumers, he said.
