Mumbai , May 24 The Maharashtra Government has finally approved `standard gauge' railway system for its Mumbai metro project. There were proposals for broad gauge also but using standard gauge would save Rs 1,027 crore, the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, said. He was addressing the media after the weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Mr Deshmukh said standard gauge was more suitable given the geography and population density of Mumbai city. "The standard gauge system would also require less land acquisition. The technology for the system is also available internationally," Mr Deshmukh said. Mr Deshmukh said that a decision has also been taken extend the underground section in the Colaba-Mahim-Charkop. In the original plan, the underground section was from Colaba till Mahalaxmi but it has now been decided to further extend it up till Mahim.
