Trading house for Tirupur knitwear likely in Antwerp

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , May 24

The proposed offshore warehousing-cum-distribution for knitwear in Europe planned by Tirupur exporters is likely to take the shape of a full-fledged trading house, according to the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA).

TEA and the Tuticorin-based logistics company, St John Freight Systems Ltd, are jointly promoting garment warehousing/distribution in the Belgian port city of Antwerp to provide a seamless supply chain solution for Tirupur-based knitwear exporters exploring European markets, especially for small but repeat orders of high-fashion garments that are time-sensitive.

TEA sources said that the 50:50 joint venture, TEA-St John Logistics Pvt Ltd floated in February, would soon set up the latter's subsidiary in Antwerp for warehousing and distribution facilities. The port city with its rail, road and waterway networks was found ideal to help reach garments to buyers both within Europe and overseas. The joint venture company will, according to TEA officials, also act as a trading house and give tremendous value relationship for existing buyers.

St John Freight systems, headquartered in Tuticorin, has 22 branches across the country and four overseas subsidiaries in Belgium, Singapore, UK and the US. It provides end-to-end supply chain solution for export houses and has tie-ups with major warehousing operators in Belgium. It plans to set up outfits in China, Dubai and Germany this year, the TEA sources said.
