Letters Setting goals
This is with reference to "When goal-setting goes wrong," (Business Line, May 22): The author has given an insightful account into the goal-setting process itself, and the gap between the achievement and goals. Goals have to be challenging and, at the same time, achievable. They should be flexible. The idea behind the process is to determine the performance of the individual against set goals and it is not to be used as a tool for penalising employees, especially while granting increments. People often confuse performance appraisal with potential assessment. The former is done to improve performance and the latter to study the potential of the person to help him move up the organisational ladder.
