`Tie-up with life sciences cos holds the key'

Prakash Kamat

Panaji , May 25

With custom synthesis for innovator companies poised to grow at 20-25 per cent per annum, and that for the generic industry likely to grow at 10-15 per cent per annum, there is a big opportunity for Indian players to grow in this space through strategic partnerships with global life sciences companies. This was the view which was echoed at the second edition of the two-day global summit on "Opportunities in Life Science Molecules: Global Partnership Summit 2006" organised by Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company on May 22-23 in south Goa.

The two-day summit preceding the Best Practices ceremony saw leading speakers from the global life sciences industry addressing the gathering on the challenges facing the Indian industry such as expanding outsourcing in the drug discovery market and securing created value in the context of the new Indian patent regime. Mr David Floyd, Executive VP and CSO, Pharmacopeia, US; Mr Dinesh Dua, President, Biotechnology, Wockhardt; and Mr Jeff Schnack, Director, Pharmaceutical Planning (Intl), Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, Japan were some of the key speakers.
